Michael P. Hines, ESQ
Attorney

Michael P. Hines received his undergraduate education at Saint Leo College, Saint Leo, Florida (BA Criminology, 1993), and his law degree from Temple University School of Law, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Juris Doctorate, 1998). He was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1998 (# 0158194). Prior to becoming a defense attorney, he was an Assistant State Attorney for Duval County, Florida, as a Prosecutor assigned to the Felony Division. He regularly tried cases such as Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Battery, Burglary, Drug Offenses, Felony DUI, Escape, Kidnapping, Murder, Robbery, Theft Offenses, and all other
Felony Offenses.

A criminal defense and family law attorney who understands the intricacies of these delicate cases from both sides, Hines served as a Police Detective, Master Police Officer and Field Training Officer. He came to the police academy by way of the United States Navy.

Hines has been a very active member of the community and has received many honors, including:

  • Mothers Against Drunk Drivers award for outstanding victim advocacy
  • Donald M. Gravatt Award: awarded to an outstanding graduate who displays compassion, fairness, and dedication to law enforcement
  • Harriet Robinson Gillock Award: awarded to an outstanding graduate who most exemplifies professional and personal dedication to their fellow students and the law school community
  • Class Act Award, Virginia Beach Police Department, recognized for highest DUI arrests of the Third Precinct
  • Medals received while in the Navy: Good Conduct Medal, Humanitarian Service Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Navy Unit Commendation

Most recently, Hines served as General Counsel for the Coastal Florida Police Benevolent Association in Daytona Beach, and before that practiced insurance defense litigation, specifically nursing home defense, as an attorney with Quintairos, McCumber, Prieto, & Wood, P.A., of Jacksonville, Florida.

Michael Hines’s areas of concentration are criminal law and family law.

Beyond his law practice, Hines is an adjunct instructor in the Criminal Justice Program at Florida Community College of Jacksonville and lives in St. Augustine with his wife and two sons.

Holli Burnett
Paralegal

Holli joined the Law Office of Michael Hines, P.A. in March of 2010, after a careerwith two North-Eastern law firms specializing in Family Law, Criminal Law and Foreclosure. She attended the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH in their American Bar Association approved Paralegal program and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science with a focus in Paralegal Studies. Holli is the firm’s Paralegal working closely with the attorneys on all cases. She will collect, analyze, and organize the information for the attorneys. She performs a variety of tasks; one of the most important tasks is helping the attorney’s prepare for trials, meetings, or hearings. Holli helps prepare motions, pleadings and affidavits that the attorneys will use in court and she will sometimes be needed to assist the attorneys inside the
courtroom as well.

Lena Miller
Legal Assistant

Lena joined the Law Office of Michael Hines in 2010. She attended Ivy Tech Community College, Fort Wayne, Indiana and received an Associates degree in Business Administration. She is currently attending DeVry University and working towards a Bachelors degree in Business Management (B.A. 2011). Lena is the Law Office’s legal assistant. She is in constant contact with clients, opposing counsel and Judicial Assistants. She schedules hearings, depositions, mediation and other necessary events in clients’ cases. She works closely with the attorneys on all cases and oversees the daily functions of the office.

Jessica Deaton, ESQ
Attorney

Jessica Deaton was admitted to the Florida Bar in January of 2007. Jessica earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Social Science with a focus on Economics and Psychology from the University of South Florida, and a Juris Doctorate from Florida Coastal School of Law. While in Law School, she obtained a prestigious internship with the Navy JAG in Jacksonville, Florida. Upon completion of Law School, she followed her passion for criminal defense and took a position as a Public Defender in St. Johns County where she relentlessly worked on thousands of cases gaining valuable court room and trial experience. Her success in the court room opened the door for her to go out into private practice and work
with The Law Office of Michael Hines. As a Criminal Defense Attorney she has handled
thousands of criminal cases and has obtained the knowledge, skills and ability to defend even the most complex criminal cases. Jessica is very involved with the criminal defense community and currently holds a position as the Treasurer of the St. Johns County Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. She is a bright young attorney who takes a great deal of pride in being active in the legal community. She is a Member of The Florida Bar, The St. Johns County Bar Association, and a member of
The Young Lawyers Division.
